Always research the company that you are auditioning for, know the shows, styles, requirements and expectations.
Find out information regarding to the company, choreographers / directors names etc.
Are you suited to the show in performance style, height and looks?
Select a clean audition outfit and dress accordingly and in-keeping to the show that you are auditioning for.
Prepare your travel plan / your arrival to your audition, transport connections, location etc. leaving enough time for delays.
Timing - Arrive in advance – it is always better to arrive early rather than late.
Even if it’s a dance call take sheet music and a monologue with you - you never know.
Research local hotels/B&Bs in case you have to stay overnight to attend a call-back the following day.
Double check the audition advert to make sure that you have all the correct information.
2. CV’s
All information on one page, clearly written, with no spelling mistakes and not saturated with too much detailed information.
Contact information should be correct, with up-to-date telephone numbers and Email addresses.
List your vital information, DOB, height, training…be honest with all your details
Any diplomas stated should be able to be shown.
A recent photo is always required. Make sure that the photo is a head shot, of a good size and quality and that the picture looks like you!
Referees should correspond to your job application.
Referees should always be informed of who you have given your CV to and for what position.
Keep your CV clean and flat – Your CV represents who you are.
Always bring spare CVs and head shots with you.
3. Audition look
Always wear the correct amount of makeup for the show that you are auditioning for. Casting directors like to see more of a blank canvas rather than trying to see past heavy make-up.
Have a hair style and look that is appropriate for the show that you are auditioning for. Make sure that the audition outfit you choose is not too stylized or baggy.
We like to see all the lines of the dance combinations.
Wearing baggy clothes would make casting directors wonder what you are trying to hide.
Bring a change of clean clothes.
Remove any piercings that might not correspond to the show, for look purposes and safety reasons.
Take all of your dancing shoes to the audition; you never know what the casting directors/chorographers might require as routines.
4. At the audition
Be prepared to stay for a long day or to be called back the following day.
Pay attention to what is always being said by the audition team.
Bring snacks and water to keep you going through the audition day.
Your attitude and presence is always noted by the casting directors, from the moment you walk into the audition room.
Pay attention and respect your fellow candidates.
Don’t over-do-it with the perfumes. Be careful of all strong odours.
Be seen but do not overdo it.
5. General notes
Be aware of your physical appearance, a dancers body is their tool. If you want to get visible tattoos or piercings it may not go in your favour for some specific roles.
Look after your teeth / hair / skin. Your body is your tool.
Always make sure that you are well rested and fresh for each and every audition.
Don’t argue with the casting team over their casting decisions.
